Seeking to avoid jet lag? Or recover from it as fast as possible? I’m returning to Israel this week. When I went twenty years ago, there was tear gas and rioting in the streets of Jerusalem. But encountering that again doesn’t scare me. My biggest fear is going through the kind of jet lag that robbed me of a good three days of time on my last visit, leaving me in foggy misery. Here is the best advice I found from travelers, via Twitter:
@velvetescape I set my watch 2 the time of my destination b4 take-off & sleep in the plane according to my destination’s time; & drink lots of water.
@velvetescape Recovering from jetlag: after arrival, go for a brisk walk/jog or a swim. Always helps.
@travlersbarista I try to go to bed a little earlier/or later according to my new time zone, the night before my flight.
@WantToGoTravel Hydrate a lot and stay up when you arrive to get on schedule.
@JCreatureTravel When I arrive in the morning, no nap or sunglasses for me. I go about my business with lots of outdoor time to reset my clock…
@JCreatureTravel And then I stay up as late as possible, eventually extending it to my normal sleep time.
@GotPassport Asia isn’t as bad as Europe for me. Get out in the sun!
@BabewBackpack I always use No Jet-lag [pills] –- feel normal even after longest journeys
@nomadicmatt I take sleeping pills on the plane [RX]
@boomergirl50 Take Gravol [normally for motion sickness, but it puts her to sleep], wear eye mask, ear plugs, prop your feet on a bag under seat & actually sleep.
Okay, so here’s my plan as I take off for Israel:
- Take No Jet-lag pills religiously
- Drink a lot of water and not a lot of wine/caffeine
- Wear eye mask and ear plugs on plane to aid sleep
- Set watch to new time zone and try and sleep accordingly
- Resist the urge to nap upon arrival
- Get out and walk
- Try and stay up until 9 or 10pm
I’ll let you know how it goes…

Ohh good list. My best tip is going the slow travel route. Trains, buses, ships, etc. instead of planes. Anything that travels closer to your own body's speed. Doesn't work for all travel plans, but absolutely brilliant if you can take it slow.
