Creston, Montana

Heartland Sunset

By Timothy J. Bergren

In Montana, if you step off the back porch you might see the painterly evening qualities of the Flathead Valley…wheat fields wave farewell to the light and bask in the golden fringes of the day… Continue reading

Swan Lake, Montana Rainbow

Photo Friday

On my husband’s last night on the lake, it was rainy, then sunny, then this beauty appeared…a fine ending to a fabulous summer on the Swan.

How to Grocery Shop in Italy

Embrace the Experience!

By Lisa T. Bergren

My cousin and her husband are renting a private villa in Tuscany this Fall with three other couples and I’m drooling with envy. Sure, the villa and views will be sumptuous. But I’d kill to sink my teeth into the hand-crafted mozzarella or perfect, Roma tomatoes or spicy, local sausage or tart, dry Pecorino cheese…We love cooking in Italy! For us, it’s a part of the experience. And so is the grocery shopping. Continue reading

Comfort of the Known

The Family Lake Home in Montana

By Lisa T. Bergren

Return to the place you loved or go someplace new? What is the value, the power of each? I’ve been contemplating this, of late. Because I’m drawn to both the Exploration of the New and the Comfort of the Known. Each has its charms; there are so many places in the world I want to see (check out our web site’s name) that it’s very hard for me to return to a location I’ve already been. Continue reading

A Dream Realized

From an Image in a Magazine to Living It

By Lisa T. Bergren

It began with a “Room with a View” feature in Conde Nast’s Traveler.  A shot out the window from Terre di Nano that captured what I’d been longing for—a visit to the heart of Tuscany—territory in which we could just be, absorb, live like the locals. Continue reading

Hey, we’re going to radio silence until we return in early June, when we get back from Israel. Grandparents have arrived to take care of the kiddos and dog (God bless ‘em) and we’re thrilled that we’re boarding a plane. Soon we’ll see:

Jerusalem, the Dead Sea, Qumran, Masada, Ein Kerem, Bethlehem, Jericho, Wadi Kelt, Nazareth, Capernaum, all around the Galilee, Bethany, Bethphage, Mt. of Olives, and then more of Jerusalem.

We’ll be staying in the heart of the old city of Jerusalem and beside the Sea of Galilee for our entire trip. We’re so looking forward to being immersed in Middle East culture and witnessing the intersection of the world’s three largest faiths. I’ve (Lisa) gone before (twenty years ago), but this will be Tim’s first visit.

On occasion, as we find WiFi access, we’ll post to Twitter (@TheWorldCalls) and Facebook (The World is Calling). Look for us there!

Jet Lag Battle Plan

Travel Bloggers’ Advice for Fast Jet Lag Recovery

Compiled by Lisa T. Bergren

Seeking to avoid jet lag? Or recover from it as fast as possible? I’m returning to Israel this week. When I went twenty years ago, there was tear gas and rioting in the streets of Jerusalem. But encountering that again doesn’t scare me. My biggest fear is going through the kind of jet lag that robbed me of a good three days of time on my last visit, leaving me in foggy misery. Here is the best advice I found from travelers, via Twitter: Continue reading

Many Glacier Hotel

Glacier National Park, Montana

By Lisa T. Bergren

We returned to Many Glacier—my favorite part of Glacier National Park—last summer for a mini-family reunion. And this time, we splurged and spent the night at the grand old lodge, rather than truckin’ it all the way back to Kalispell at the end of the day (2.5-3 hours).
