I can understand how going in a vehicle that isn't set up for this type of off-roading would be less than enjoyable...try it on an ATV! It amazing how much more you can see! Get off the pavement and have fun (but be prepared).

[...] Sephoris also known as Sippori, Zippori —“the ornament of all Galilee,” as Josephus once called it, was a major city just over the ridge from Nazareth. Today, this mostly deserted archeological excavation is a wonderful stop, giving visitors the sense of the grandeur, wealth and industry of a Roman city. There is what is called “The Mona Lisa of the Galilee,” a beautiful woman—the lady of the house? A courtesan? —found in the dining room/triclinium of the 3rd century Dionysus House atop the ridge. She has a laurel crown and earrings and is so spookily 3D, you feel like she might rise from the floor to greet you. (Source) [...]

Self catering accommodation like houses and holiday cottages are all available anywhere in the world and property owners are not as avaricious as some hotels.

Ahhhh! Reminds me of that little espresso bar in Rome - the one around the corner from our hotel where we ate breakfast each morning...you know, the one where you asked for eggs and they looked at you as if you were a bit strange. :-)
