This site, just three miles from Independence Pass, was the first community in the Roaring Fork Valley. It was established July 4, 1879 (thus the name) when miners in the Beldon camp struck gold, and thrived for years as a mining camp, stagecoach and layover stop for all those who traveled over Hunter’s Pass, which later was renamed Independence Pass, after the town.
