In search of epic tide pools in Southern California, we went to this famed surfer’s beach in Palos Verdes. Did we find epic pools? Notsomuch. Did we find an incredible view/beach and nice hike? For sure, dude. Continue reading
Garden of the Gods
Colorado Springs, ColoradoBy Lisa T. Bergren
I can see her towering, red sandstone spires from my house, fifteen miles away, but traffic often keeps me from nearing her for months. My tween barely remembers being there last, and my youngest, not at all, so on a beautiful fall day, we set off to discover the Garden of the Gods anew. Continue reading

Aspen, Colorado
independence Pass, Top of the RockiesBy Lisa T. Bergren
We made the four hour drive from Colorado Springs to Aspen, over Independence Pass, and what a gorgeous drive it was! Fall leaves and underbrush are reaching their height of color, and we pulled over again and again to admire the autumnal glory. Best weekends to enjoy the fall colors are typically the second, third and fourth in September. Continue reading

Family Hike to Grinnell Lake
Glacier National Park, MontanaBy Lisa T. Bergren
Is your family thinking of a vacation in Glacier National Park? This is a super-easy, accessible hike for a family in Glacier National Park, and a great choice if you’re staying at Many Glacier Hotel. You can either do it by walking the whole trail (about 6.5 miles), which goes right beside the two small, alpine waterways (Swiftcurrent Lake and Lake Josephine), or taking two boat rides, with a total of about 1.8 miles of walking.

A Perfect Day in the ParkBy Lisa T. Bergren
Our perfect day in Glacier National Park started early, arriving at the gate at West Glacier by 8:15am. This allowed us to beat most of the crowds and make lots of stops. When you’re traveling with kids (we had two teens, a 10-year-old and a 5-year-old with us), this is always a good idea. Also, when you’re in a national park, you get a whole other “feel” for it if you can get some trail time. We stopped in Apgar for a turn around the visitor’s center (grab a deluxe free map there), bathroom break and to get a look at the lovely, still Lake McDonald. Continue reading

I have lived in Oak Harbor, Washington for ten years. Oak Harbor is on Whidbey Island. To get onto Whidbey Island, you can either take a ferry from Mukilteo, Washington (north of Seattle) or you can drive up and drive across the Deception Pass Bridge. Continue reading
Surprising Surprise, Arizona
Spring Break in ArizonaBy Lisa T. Bergren, Spring 2008, updated 2/10
Over Spring break we drove to Surprise, Arizona (northeast of Phoenix) from Colorado to visit grandparents who were wintering there. They were renting a house in a retirement village, with great pools and wonderful walkways. The majority of our vacation was spent beside the pool (our hosts also had one in their backyard), but we also had two excursions we’d recommend: Continue reading
Early Summer in Nevis, West Indies
Authentic CaribbeanBy Lisa T. Bergren
As soon as school ended, we packed up our kids, (ages 13, 9 and 5) and went to Nevis, an island in the West Indies. If you’re like most people I meet, you’re blinking twice and muttering, “Nevis? Where’s that?” Continue reading

Top 3 secrets from a psuedo-local...I’ve been tagged, as in, “travel tag–you’re it!”–a game in which travel writers share three of their beloved secret places…reluctantly. Reluctantly, because if I tell you about it, it won’t be a secret anymore, right? We don’t want our secret places overrun. There’s something about keeping a place special–only sharing it with a few special, chosen ones–that makes a girl smile. But it’s your day…I’m about to share some treasured family secrets about Montana. Continue reading
